Podcast #22: Buying & Getting the Most Out of Your Band Saw

Some woodworkers consider a band saw the most useful tool in a woodworking shop. You’ll learn why Doug Hicks feels this way during this week’s Woodsmith Woodworking Seminar Podcast. During this podcast, you’ll get some tips for buying a band saw and blades. Plus, you’ll learn how to properly set up a band saw and a few techniques you can perform with this versatile machine.

If you’re interested in picking up a downloadable copy of the seminar guide (in case you want to follow along during the podcast), be sure to check out the Woodsmith Podcast Store. Also this week at the store, you’ll find a link to some good deals on a few band saw upgrades that Doug mentioned during his seminar. And as always, all of the great information provided during the seminars comes right from the pages of Woodsmith magazine. Great show. Ideas for next year… I would liked to have seem more on how to set the fence in line with the drift so it’ll re-saw straight lines using the fence. I read of one guy who says it’s ALL in the tracking, that you can cure all drift problems by adjusting the tracking until it is cutting dead on parallel using a fence set square to the front edge of the table. How about height extensions for the band saw to do wider re-sawing? That would have been interesting.
I am absolutely loving these podcasts. What a fun and effective way to learn woodworking skills. I just ordered a 2 year subscription to Shop Notes to keep it coming. Doug mentioned in this podcast that there would be plans for the circle cutter jig on the website here, but I’ve spent half an hour looking and I can’t find it. Can you tell me where I can find materials that go with each of the podcasts. I have not been having luck in general with that task.

Russ, Thanks for the kind comments concerning the podcasts. We’ve gotten lots of great feedback and suggestions, all of which are taken into consideration when we plan for the next round of seminars at the Woodsmith Store next fall. As you may know, most of the information used during the seminars comes right from the pages of Woodsmith, ShopNotes, and Workbench magazines. In fact, the jig that Doug mentioned in the podcast came from an early edition of Woodsmith.

One of the benefits of being able to attend the seminars in person includes receiving a guide, with loads of support material inside, as part of the price of admission. In additional to the guide, we often offer a few extra articles online as supplements to the printed guide.

For those of you who are watching the podcast online though, the guide and the online articles are available for sale at Woodsmith Podcast Store. You’ll find the article on the circle-cutting jig there. Thanks again for your feedback, the next seminar podcast, “Pocket-Hole Joinery,” should be available in a couple of weeks.

Guys,

I really enjoy these. And thanks SO much for lettings us download the video for watching later! That is one of my favorite features. So often we get charged for this at other sites! The content to date has been great! I’ve been burning these onto DVD and watching them with my pop! The clamp (cam clamp I think he called it) idea for attaching the extended home-made table to the bandsaw was AWESOME! I made a larger table top also but couldn’t figure out how to securely hold it down, while not having a clamp stick up over the top!

Thanks again! Keep them coming!

I really enjoy these podcast. They are such a big help for those of us who are more visual learners. And I have asked for a subscription to shop notes for christmas. Thanks again for providing such a great learning tool.

Great video – the downloadable guide is a great idea as well, although the article on the micro-adjustable fence talks about adjusting for drift and making the fence so it can adjust this way and refers to Pg.16….the article provides only pgs. 13-15. I’m left at a bit of a loss now about how to do this?

Mike,

Thanks for the feedback on the band saw podcast. The point you bring up about the missing article in the seminar guide is valid. I’m providing a link to the article you asked for here, so that anyone else who orders the seminar guide for this podcast will have access to it as well.
