This Week’s Best WoodNet Forum Thread

Neanderthals. Galoots. Whatever you call them, they sure are serious about woodworking with hand tools.

Roy Underhill is their God … a Lie-Nielsen Toolworks catalog their Holy Book … shops without electricity their Shangri-La … and making paper-thin shavings with a hand plane their Nirvana.

Here’s this week’s best Woodworking Hand Tools thread.

Hi Deirdre,

I’m a bit of a Galoot myself and so I was interested in your topic on your shop-made hand plane. I had the same problem with a simple smoothing plane I’d made and was going to post a solution, but someone else beat me to it. That’s what I like about the WoodNet forums. There’s lots of good advice floating around out there.

The WoodNet forums are an incredibly valuable resource, especially for hand-tool woodworkers (because a lot of that information isn’t as easy to find). I have partially fixed the problem with my plane, but still have some more tuning to go.

To have the first response be from a small plane maker (Steve Knight), well, that’s just the extra bonus!

Does anyone know where I can get a repair manual on a Stanley Bailey No. 5 plane?
